IELTS and TOEFL Secrets with Suresh facebook/suresh.tutorial Suresh Rai; Chairman; Eden Academy Consultancy Pvt Ltd, Dharan, Sunsari Tel: 025-532677 Mobile Number: 9842063315 IELTS Listening Sub-test General Overview 1. IELTS listening sub-test lasts for about half an hour (30 minutes) and at the end of the test, you are allotted 10 minutes to transfer your answers to the official answer sheet. 2. When the recording is playing, you should write all your answers on the question booklet. In other words, you must use the question booklet as the rough paper on which you can write anything you like. However, you must transfer all your answers to the answer sheet at the end of the test when you are given ten minutes extra time. 3. You are given a total of 40 items (questions) to answer based on what you hear in the recording. 4. There are four sections for the listening module, and each section consists of 10 questions. 5. The recording is played once only, so you must write the answers as you listen to the recording. 6. At first, you hear all the instructions in the recording. 7. You are given some time to read the instructions and the questions. 8. In section 1, you usually listen to a conversation in an everyday social situation; e.g. two colleagues in the office or a customer and a staff member in a department store. 9. In section 2, you usually listen to a monologue. In other words, you hear one person speaking in an everyday social situation. 10. In section 3, you generally listen to a conversation between two or more people in an educational or training context, e.g. tutorial or seminar. 11. In section 4, you often listen to a monologue on a certain academic topic. In other words, you hear a lecture or talk on a topic of general academic interest. 12. Actually, section 1 and section 2 are based on non-academic and everyday social situation themes while section 3 and section 4 are related to more educational contexts. 13. Section 1 is the easiest of all the sections, and the level of difficulty increases as you proceed to the further sections. Frequently Asked Questions 1. Forms 2. Multiple Choice 3. Short-answer questions 4. Flow-chart completion 5. Sentence completion 6. Table completion 7. Labeling a diagram, plan or map 8. Matching 9. Classifying Tips and strategies for Listening Module 1. Read the instructions for each task carefully. Check the maximum number of words you are allowed to write. 2. Listen to the instructions in the recording very attentively, and when you are given some to read the instructions and questions, you should read the questions properly, understand them better, and underline the key words with a pencil. Actually, make sure that you understand what you need to do. 3. Think about the situation or context and try to guess what vocabulary you might hear. 4. Highlight or underline key words. You are allowed to mark the question paper. 5. As far as possible, predict or anticipate the answers. Even though your prediction may be incorrect, trying to predict the answers will help you focus on the exercise. In particular, try and identify what sort of words you are listening for; name, number, place; what part of speech; noun, verb, or adjective. 6. Remember that listening effectively does not mean you need to understand every single word you hear. In fact, you should not even try to do it. Native speaker listeners pick up on the most important words and phrases which carry meaning, and that is what you should try and do. Do not panic if you do not understand each word! 7. Always listen for signpost expressions such as ‘’ but, however, while, whereas, but the fact remains that….., even though, although, even if, despite the fact that, in spite of the fact that…., …….and secondly, moving to the next point,……and most importantly, etc.’’ 8. Listen for similar words or synonyms because the words you see in the questions will not be spoken out by the speakers in the recording. For example; if one of the multiple choice answers is ‘’ on foot’’, the speaker in the recording might say,’’ John walks to work.’’ 9. Answer items are often pronounced clearly, stressed or repeated. If a speaker whispers or mumbles the words, it is probably not the correct answer. 10. Do not automatically write the first thing you hear that might sound right. There are usually ‘’ distracters ‘’ in the listening test. 11. While you are listening to the recording, do not write down everything you hear. You will not succeed and you will miss important information as a result. 12. Listen to answers to two questions at once because sometimes the speakers might already have said the answer to the first question without you realizing it. In a case like this, even though you miss the answer to the first question, you won’t miss the answer to the second question. 13. Even though you miss some of the answers, do not panic about it. Just concentrate on getting rest of all the answers correct. 14. Always listen to the last sections of the words more attentively because you must write down exactly what the speakers in the recording say. For instance, if a speaker in the recording says ‘’ reservations’’, but you write only ‘’ reservation’’, your answer will be invalid. 15. You can use both British and American spellings. For instance, ‘’Cheque’’ in British English is ‘’ Check’’ in American English. 16. After the signpost expressions, the speakers usually say the most important piece of information, or the answers. So you should know these signpost words,’’ but, however, while, even though, although, even if, despite the fact that, in spite the fact that, but the fact remains that, moreover, furthermore, in addition to this, etc.’’ 17. You need to use your common sense too when you are listening to the recording. 18. You must listen for correct spellings, days, dates, and numbers. Usually, the names of the people and the places are spelt out by the speakers, so write the correct spellings as you listen to the recording. 19. When you are listening to the recording, you should also understand the moods of the speakers as well. ( Excited, Happy, Tired, Sad, Frustrated, etc) 20. You must be able to do three things simultaneously; read, listen, and write. 21. While the recording is playing, you should concentrate properly on what the speakers in the recording are talking about and what the questions require that you write as the answers. Do not get distracted by anyone or anything. Do not think about anything or anybody else. 22. You must not be nervous during the exam. Be more confident when you sit in the test. 23. Think positive throughout the test. 24. At the end of each section, you are given half a minute to check your answers. If you are sure that you have written all the correct answers, use this time to move on to the next section and look at the questions in that section. 25. At the end of the listening test, you will be given ten minutes to transfer your answers to the answer sheet. You must copy only the correct answers onto the answer sheet. I wish you all the best for your stupendous success in IELTS test, your future career and entire life.
