IMHOTEP HE WHO COMES IN PEACE He was the worlds first named architect who built Egypts first pyramid, is often recognized as the worlds first doctor, a priest, scribe, sage,poet, architect, engineer, carpenter, sculptor, astronomer,vizier, government administrator, philosopher, physician, surgeon, the renaissance man of the ancient world. Imhotep, who preceded the Greek Hippocrates by some two thousands years, was the true Father of Medicine. In fact the Greeks worshiped Imhotep as a deity. Temples were raised up in his honor where physicians were trained. Imhotep was a common man whose talent, genius, and contribution to mankind caused him to be worshiped as a god well into the sixth century, some three thousand years after his death. So revered was Imhotep, whose name means ‘he who comes in peace’, he was only supplanted by the coming of Christianity. Imhotep was the architect and builder of the first pyramid, the famed Step Pyramid of Saqqara. Imhotep held many titles in accordance with his talents. Chief Architect, Chief Astronomer, High Priest at Heliopolis, High Priest of Amen Ra, Administrator of the Great Palace, Chief Minister and Chancellor of the Pharaoh Djoser. A poet and philosopher (he coined the saying “eat, drink, and be merry, for tomorrow we shall die”) Imhotep was favored by Egyptian royalty. Initially recognized by King Djoser, he served two of his successors. Though the accomplishments of Imhotep range far and wide it is his work in medicine that was the primary basis of his veneration. Imhotep diagnosed and treated over 200 diseases. Imhotep treated tuberculosis, gallstones, appendicitis, gout and arthritis. He also performed surgery and practiced some dentistry. Imhotep extracted medicine from plants. He also knew the position and function of the vital organs and circulation of the blood system. Imhotep was the first to keep medical records and histories of treatments. Imhotep is the pioneer who established medicine as a discipline. The African Genius Imhotep.
