IMPORTANT GUN SAFETY RULE: KNOW WHAT A SQUIB LOAD IS AND HOW TO RECOGNIZE IT! Usually my gun posts here are political - but this one is different. In this video, an historical and mechanically sound M1 rifle was destroyed and the shooter barely escaped injury. The cause? A squib load. These are exceptionally rare (in 48 years of shooting, I have never experienced one), but they are very dangerous when they do happen. In these cases, a cartridge with little to no powder charge is fired. It makes little to no noise and doesnt cycle semi-auto guns. It also doesnt push the bullet out of the barrel. The shooter than cycles another, good round into the chamber and fires the gun - which than blows up due to excessive pressure generated by two bullets. So, how do you avoid this? Simple: If you fire a gun and something sounds different STOP AT ONCE. Examine the fired case - is there a bullet attached? If not, assume there is a bullet lodged in the barrel. DO NOT ATTEMPT TO FIRE THE GUN UNTIL IT IS CLEARED. In the video, the girl simply ejected the empty and chambered another round - and you can see the results! Unload the gun and make doubly sure it is empty. Then pass a cleaning rod through the barrel. If a bullet is in there you probably can push it out. If a rod isnt available, unload the gun, shine a light into the breach and look down the barrel. If you can see the light there is no bullet lodged in the barrel. If you cant, the barrel is obstructed and the gun may explode if fired.
