IMPORTANT PUBLIC SAFETY PRESENTATION Long Beach City Hall - 6th Floor Tuesday, January 13 at 7pm On October 29, 2012, Superstorm Sandy descended upon the City of Long Beach, causing catastrophic flooding and damage throughout the City, which threatened the health, safety and security of the citizens of Long Beach. For over two years, the barrier island’s only 911 receiving center, Long Beach Medical Center (LBMC), has been shuttered, forcing residents to obtain emergency care elsewhere. Due to the geographic isolation of all communities situated on Long Beach Island, coupled with traffic and weather implications, many citizens have expressed serious concerns regarding the timely provision of emergency services. Given the uncertainty regarding the fate of the hospital and the status of a 911 receiving emergency room, the City took its next step in its sustained advocacy to bolster emergency services by hiring an expert consulting firm to perform a full-scale evaluation of its emergency response needs. The consultants have assessed the City’s current emergency response needs to have helped identify options for enhanced emergency services going forward. The ICMA Center for Public Safety Management was retained by the City of Long Beach to analyze and present a comprehensive report on the state of the City’s emergency response practices, recommend viable options to enhance public safety in light of constraints (including but not limited to available hospital facilities), which includes the analyses of qualitative and cost considerations, and setting forth implementation strategies. ICMA Center for Public Safety Management’s findings will be unveiled at a special public presentation on the 6th Floor of City Hall (1 West Chester St) on Tuesday, January 13 at 7pm. All residents are welcome to attend. ICMA is the premier local government leadership and management organization. It has been in existence for over 100 years and provides an informational clearing house, technical assistance, training, and professional development to more than 9,000 city, town, and county experts and other individuals throughout the world. The ICMA Center for Public Safety Management team helps communities solve critical problems by providing management support to local governments.
