IN CONVERSATION WITH FIONA HIIGINS WEDNESDAY 7.30 JUNE 11TH. Caroline Farrell will be talking with Fiona Higgins about her path to publication and differing writing processes for her first, second and nearly to be released, third book. Come along to the second night of Spread the Word and you will enjoy some interesting banter about finding love and maintaining it in the midst of birth, breastfeeding and family life. Fiona Higgins has worked in philanthropy and social investment in Australia since 1998. Since 2011, she has fulfilled the role of Director of Grantmaking and Evaluation at Australian Philanthropic Services, an entity based in Sydney, assisting high net worth individuals to plan and structure their charitable giving for greatest social impact. This is a role she continues to maintain from Bali, with the (sometimes erratic) assistance of modern technology. Her previous roles include Executive Director of The Caledonia Foundation, Philanthropy Services Manager at Cambooya Services, Programme Manager for The Vincent Fairfax Family Foundation and Communications Officer at Australian Red Cross (NSW). Her passion for the charitable sector and philanthropy began a long time ago, when she rode a bicycle 16,455 kilometres around Australia to raise funds for The OzIndo Project, a charitable initiative which funded microcredit and ‘pasar murah’ projects in three of the poorest provinces of Indonesia. Fiona holds undergraduate and post-graduate qualifications in the humanities and social investment from the University of Sydney and Swinburne University. She lives with her husband and three children in Bali, and is the author of three books. Her memoir, ‘Love in the Age of Drought’, was published in 2009 by Pan Macmillan, and tells the story of her journey as a quintessential city girl meeting and marrying a cotton farmer from rural Australia. Her first novel, ‘The Mothers’ Group’, was published in Australia in 2012 by Allen & Unwin, with foreign rights subsequently sold into France, Germany, Spain and the Netherlands. Her new novel, ‘Wife on the Run’, is set to be published in Australia in November 2014 (just in time for Christmas).
