IN SOUTHERN CHINA, AUDIENCES ENGAGE I was honored that the audience in Guangzhou was so enthusiastic about NOWHERE TO CALL HOME some of them sat down and wrote up their reflections. Hours after the organizer posted the collection on Wechat-- Chinas version of WhatsApp-- the article had as many clicks as my trailer got the entire week after National Public Radio in the U.S. did a story. (I know, this could be considered apples and oranges, but you get the picture.) The organizer was so inspired shes decided to put together a mini film series on migrant women! Here are my translations of some of the comments. (Someone please correct me if I misrepresented anyones opinion.) 作者希望更多人能看到这部纪录片，以此来开启对话，但正如一位关心女性权益的观众说的：“一部电影可以开启对话，但对话却不仅需要一部片子，还需要我们态度的改变！” The filmmaker said she wants more people to watch the film in hopes of starting a conversation. Then a member of the audience replied A film can start a conversation, but a conversation needs not only this film, it also needs us to change our attitudes. 我一直认为，记录的意义远不止是呈现，呈现之后引发的效应大概是更重要的。观影后的讨论大部分集中于汉族文化中心主义和民族关系的检讨，而影片中汉人与少数民族的冲突也确实多次出现。我想这样的呈现和反思当然是非常重要的，然而，理解赞塔的生命历程却绝不能脱离全球资本主义的框架，这个脉络没有被讨论到是我觉得非常遗憾的地方。 The significance of the film is not only on the screen. The discussion after the screening is even more important. The discussion focussed on Han Chinese chauvinism, and relations with ethnic minorities. There were several scenes of conflict between Han and minorities in the film. Of course, this discussion is extremely important, but we cant understand protagonist Zantas life without discussing global capitalism. I feel its extremely unfortunate this didnt come up in the discussion. 观众大福：赞塔作为一位少数民族尤其是藏族同胞，在北京受到的歧视和不友好对待，是对我触动最大的一点。并非单纯出于所谓的“同情”，而是对汉文化对藏族文化如此恶意理解的震撼。我觉得从这一点看首先我们最应该反思的是主流文化宣传和政策对藏族人藏族社会的看法 Zanta is a minority and a Tibetan fellow countryman. What shocked me most was the bullying and unfriendly treatment she was subjected to in Beijing. The Han Chinese misunderstand Tibetan culture, and are mean. I think the most important point to reflect on is the impact of propaganda produced by the mainstream culture and government policies on Tibetan society.
