INSULIN AND TYPE II DIABETES. Insulin is released when we consume - TopicsExpress

INSULIN AND TYPE II DIABETES. Insulin is released when we consume carbohydrates (which are breads, pastas, rice, and many others). Carbohydrates are basically SUGARS, which are broken down into smaller molecules called GLUCOSE. Insulin is responsible for taking the glucose (sugar) and letting the cells absorb it for energy. However, in Type II Diabetes, there is insulin resistance. The amount of glucose builds up, so the body starts producing more insulin to keep up with the high glucose levels in the blood, but after some time cannot keep up and that is when Type II Diabetes occurs. Glucose builds up instead of being absorbed into the cells which is why people who have Type II Diabetes must control their carbohydrate/sugar intake. Reason for Type II Diabetes have been linked to being overweight and physical inactivity. Also, some people are more prone to it as well, so make sure you know your family history.
