IPCAP 8th National Convention - Aug. 1-3,2013 at FAITH Batangas CONCURRENT WORKSHOPS FOR DAY 2 & 3. 1. Grief Management by Dr. Alda Perlita S. Polestico Grief is like a winter of emotional life, and needs to pass for spring to come. It is a natural phenomenon that everyone has experienced in this world- when someone leaves, when someone dies, when loss happens. It has a normal trajectory, which will involve some feelings of sorrow, some tears, and perhaps some melancholy for a period of time as individual transitions through the change in his/her life. In school setting, there is a pressing need to develop grief management program for parentally bereaved children and bereaving parents who experienced such loss. In this workshop school counselors shall explore grief models and the grief process including the tools and techniques. The outcome result of this workshop is to develop grief management program in school setting that would be directed towards evidence-based practice. 2. Developing Resiliency Program by Dr. Clarissa F. Delariarte Young people today are given varied challenging social, economic, personal and even political and religious situations that challenge their ability to cope and be resilient. Using the outcomes-based approach and systems thinking as framework, workshop participants will be led to come up with a relevant and functional resiliency program that is comprehensive, data driven, evidence based and an integral part of the total educational system. 3. Suicide Prevention by Dr. Julian R. Montano, RGC As school counselors, we are called to lead our school’s response to a specific crisis that is often called a “cry for help!” Hence, this is a psycho-educational program design-and-development workshop on suicidal prevention. To start with, participants will first be provided the basic “know-how” in understanding the different factors that contribute to the development of suicide-related conditions. In addition, the counseling professionals’ training needs and the available resources will be identified. Then, we will design our program following a specific program development model. To conclude, we will discuss valuable information for helping professionals in understanding and helping suicidal individuals particularly in terms of conceptualizing their clients’ problems. 4. Emergency Guidance Program in Response to Violence in Schools by Dr. Shiela Marie G. Hocson, RGC As the 21st century unfolds, social structures and personal values of the people also continue to change and become more complicated. Problems of the adolescents are becoming complex. A rapidly changing environment; violence in home, schools and communities; teenage suicide and drug abuse are the few examples that students face today. With all these problems is a challenge among counselors and people in the helping profession to provide guidance programs in response to violence and the many problems that they are having. The main purpose of the workshop is to assist guidance counselors and other helping professionals in formulating an intervention program in response to emergency cases in schools. Thus, it is the hope of this workshop to impart valuable strategies and techniques on program development that will guide them in combating violence and special cases in campus. 5. Action Research in Counseling by Ms. Myra Alday-Bersoto, M.A., RGC Action research as proactive professional activity is imperative for the accountability and advancement of counseling in the school setting and beyond. Action research is appropriate for assessing student-based outcomes and evaluating the effectiveness of school counseling programs. Action research is an avenue to systematically solve problems and for professional development. This lecture-workshop aims to provide counselors with the process, resources, legal and ethical concerns, and the benefits/relevance of doing action research. The participants will learn the basics of writing an action research and will enable them to come-up with an action research project.
