Idioms for CONFRONTATION... In class today, one of my students told another one to “f__k off” and I was shocked and upset. I told him never to say that to anyone ever! He said, “Why? What’s the big deal? Everyone says it all the time!” I asked him whether he would jump off a bridge, run around naked or eat a live snake if other people were doing it. He said “NO WAY!” so I told him that we needed to find other ways to respond to someone when they are making you upset. DO NOT: - Tell someone to shut up - Say F__K off/ F__k you. - Call someone a bad name DO SAY: GET OFF MY BACK. I will do it! -use this expression when someone is bothering you to do something and has asked you many times even though you said you would do it. CUT IT OUT! (stop it) Someone is doing something to irritate you, like talking when you told them to stop, hurting your feelings or other annoying things and you want them to stop. NOW WAIT JUST A MINUTE If someone has said something rude to you, you can say, “Now wait just a minute!” and then explain how you feel. It gives you time to think about what you want to say. It is used for saying that you disagree with what someone is saying or doing, or that you want them to listen to you. WHATEVER YOU SAY This is to dismiss what someone has said. When you say this, you are saying, “I don’t care what you said, this conversation is over.” Now, hopefully, you can use someone of these expressions in confrontational situations. Don’t swear, say bad words or call others names. Have you ever had a confrontation in English? What did you say? What happened?
