If learning, particularly about subjects like history and science, shakes your faith completely, you were probably only believing in fairy tales. The people and events during and since the New Testament were and are human. The fact that there are occasionally a few exaggerations, a few things that can be interpreted as contradictions, and that there was an actual process to determine what books made it into the Bible should not in any way shake you. Witnesses of any event will present their summary differently depending on their audience and point of view. As in any court proceeding, whether you believe them or not either depends on the credibility of the witness or which side youre more naturally inclined to believe. A pessimist needs a witness to be proven credible to believe, an optimist will believe until the witness is proven not to be credible. Naturally either side will celebrate anything that makes their case stronger. However, if you are expecting anything that goes through human interpretation to be perfect, you will probably be disappointed. The mature person of faith can embrace this reality and understand what a miracle it is that our Bible presents us a method to understand God, how our relationship with Him has grown and changed, and also presents us with the truth of how we were saved through Jesus. Appreciate our history for what it is, flaws and all, and youll keep from creating doubts in yourself through simple academic discussion. Christians historically have things to apologize for,(we were bad at being armed and powerful and our methods of conversion of european pagans can cause nightmares), but fear not: Jesus isnt one of them.
