If recent developments are anything to go by, the international profile of the city of Calabar, the Cross River State capital, is rising steadily. For instance, last year, Calabar hosted the UN World Tourism Organisation’s Commission for Africa Conference. In May 2013, a high-level Chinese delegation announced plans to open a major truck manufacturing plant in Calabar. On June 18, 2013, the American energy conglomerate, General Electric, began the construction of a $1bn (₦158bn) service and manufacturing plant in Calabar. Also in June, Calabar hosted the 2013 edition of the Africa CEO Roundtable and Conference on Corporate Sustainability and Responsibility.
