It argues that education is a matter of mind and behavior and not degrees, certificates and diplomas. It brings out the difference between the ability requirements of a doctor, musician, scientist, etc and stresses that there cannot be a common test to assess these diverse abilities. The author is an internationally well-respected theoretical linguist, with a Ph.D in Linguistics from Standford University and has made significant contributions to linguistic theory as a researcher. She taught at the National University of Singapore from 1990 to 2006.
