If the spiral of Blasphemy accusations is not stopped, an inter-religious genocide may become reality in Pakistan. Dr. Taimur Rahman A quick google search shows that Ali kay saath hai Zehra ki shadi has over 16,000 videos most of which are at various weddings. This song is arguably one of the most popular wedding songs, especially at Shia functions. And yes people dance at weddings as they are celebrating happiness. They also do the joota chupai rasam as a fun game. These tradition have been around for hundreds of years. In these centuries there has never been anyone who has considered this as blasphemous. Suddenly in order to shut down GEO because of their accusation against the ISI, it has now become blasphemy. ARY also wants to shut down GEO to increase its market share. The use of religion for these sordid political and commercial gain is not only repulsive because it is making a mockery out of religion. But Blasphemy law in Pakistan has become one of those laws that the mere accusation is enough to send people into a frenzy of illogical violence. This is spiralling out of control and has to stop. Only the people can make it stop because the state and ruling class simply dont have the political foresight to clamp down on it. The media is using it to its own advantage in commercial wars. Politicians use it to bring down their opponents. Recent episodes have shown that the Taliban is only the tip of the iceberg as far as religious extremism is concerned. We have clean shaven Taliban sitting on TV exploiting religion 24 hours a day. In these circumstances, more and more an inter-religious genocide is becoming a very real possibility in Pakistan. Think about it calmly and cooly. Is this where you want Pakistan to go?
