If there was a spectrum where on one end theres the fanboy film geek whos favorite movie of all time is, you guessed it, Star Wars, and on the other end lies the cinephile sophisti-shite, whos favorite film is something by Ozu, Fassbinder, Jodorowsky, etc. all smashed together into one, Id probably fall somewhere in between. I dont have to rush to see all of the Star Wars films, for example, or necessarily have to love everything that based on some sort of comic book, and I also dont have to rush to see every single film on the Criterion list just because its on the Criterion list. I was recently told by someone that Ive seen more movies than anyone theyve ever met, yet there are literally millions I have yet to see and more and more are that being made and will be made in the future. Theres no rush. Ill see what Im meant to see when/if Im meant to see it. No I havent seen every single Star Wars film, no I havent seen Top Gun, no I havent seen The Princess Bride. Yet. No I havent seen The Seventh Seal, Yojimbo, The Exterminating Angel, or Woman Under the Influence. Yet. And yes my favorite filmmaker of all time is Martin Scorsese, to most probably a highly unoriginal choice, but also the reason I wanted to make movies for a living. The difference here is that my favorite Scorsese film isnt Goodfellas (on one end) or The Last Temptation of Christ (on the other end), or even Taxi Driver (which has lost a little of its profundity for me over the years, for some reason). My favorite Scorsese film is Raging Bull, not because its most critics favorite, but simply because it pulled at something deep in my core about how I felt as a human being, and because it was the first film I saw that made me say, Okay, this is what I want to do. And thats what its all about for me when it comes to movies. As the master, Stanley Kubrick, put it, In the end, the test of a work of art is our affection for it, not our ability to explain why it is good. That feeling, that feeling I get after the end of a truly great film is what it is all about. Its what I chase all the time when I watch a film, through to the end, for the first time, and the credits begin to roll. So there you have it. Idk why I just went on a rant but there it is.
