If we dont do any formative assessment at all for our units, how do we know who needs to learn what? And how do we find out who already knows much of what well be teaching? And which kids arent even ready to start this process because of significant skills gaps? Im always surprised at the number of teachers who dont do any pre-assessment at all, even through conversation with kids. And those who do, often administer it the day they begin the unit. How do we create appropriate plans if we dont preassess well in advance?
