If you are experiencing multiple symptoms that could be thyroid-related, it is IMPERATIVE to insist your doctor order ALL of the following tests. The only standard test run is Thyroid Stimulating Hormone (TSH). TSH is a pituitary hormone, not a thyroid hormone. Using it as the sole gauge of thyroid health is similar to measuring the oil in your car in order to determine if you need to add water to the radiator. it is indirect and highly inaccurate. In order to truly assess thyroid health, the following tests must all be ordered: - Thyroid Stimulating Hormone (TSH) - Free T3 (The active thyroid hormone) - Free T4 (Many docs will claim this number is inaccurate. Ignore them)( - Reverse T3 (To gauge your anti-hormone levels) For anyone with autoimmune issues or who just wants thorough testing, I also recommend having the following tested to measure the potential for auto-immune thyroid involvement: - TPO - TbAg Do not ever allow your doctor to disagree with any of those tests. It is impossible to accurately assess thyroid health without all of them. Insist your doctor run the correct testing. if your doctor is not familiar with those tests, find someone to interpret them who is. I have spent many hours training docs on how to interpret their patients test results. Im thankful there are docs out there who are willing to learn new ways to help their patients!
