Location: Nairobi Reporting to: Program Manager Duration: 2 years with possibility of renewal Closing Date: 9th August 2013 Background/General Description: Undugu Society of Kenya (USK) is a local non -profit NGO established in 1973 by the late Father Arnold Grol, a Dutch priest. It deals with the rehabilitation and reintegration of children and youth living and working on the streets as well as empowerment of poor urban and rural communities in Kenya with programs in Kisumu, Machakos and Nairobi. USK is recruiting an officer to be based in Nairobi who will implement a project targeting deaf children and youth as well as their parents. The post holder will oversee smooth implementation of project activities in both Nairobi and Kisumu. The project will work closely with the Government, especially the County Education Boards and Education Assessment Resource Centers in ensuring that deaf children access education. It will involve conducting hearing assessment camps, empowering deaf youth and parents with deaf children and developing and strengthening parents support groups in Kisumu and Nairobi. Duties and Accountabilities: The job holder will be responsible and accountable for continued project development, implementation and monitoring activities under the Deaf Children and Youth Project including: • Ensuring project implementation as per the agreed work plan. • Maintaining close collaboration with partners, including Government of Kenya line Ministries, other agencies, and community leaders at all phases of the project. • Advising USK management on matters pertaining to disability especially during the development of proposals and other plans. • Ensuring adherence to the existing policy documents (and manuals) including the child protection policy. • Closely working with and supervising the Project Officers, Project Interpreter, Youth Facilitators and Volunteers. • Responsible for the preparation, review and submission of monthly, quarterly, semi-annual and annual monitoring reports to the Program Manager. • Responsible for lobbying and advocacy activities especially those targeting deaf children • Management of all issues relating to the project cycle in accordance with the project agreements and Memorandum of Understanding (MOU), supervision and training of staff, volunteers and interns under the project • Participate in meetings and other official functions and missions as a representative of USK Disability Project. • Developing project activity strategy and review and/or implementation of plans, monitoring and coordination of activities • Participating in budget planning and preparation; and managing activity budgets participating in operations research within the project. Selection Criteria: • Degree in Social Sciences or any other relevant field, a masters degree in relevant field desirable • 4 years experience in working with children and youth with disabilities especially deaf children; knowledge of sign language is an added advantage • Hands on experience /exposure in community project activity implementation • Strong analytical skills. • Excellent interpersonal and team building skills; Strong communication skills. • Good organizational skills – planning and implementation • Computer literate Undugu Society of Kenya is a Child Focused Organization and the job holder must demonstrate an understanding of the Child and Disability Rights issues in Kenya and commit to USK’s core values and Child Protection Policy.
