If you were to ask people what one needs to be successful, there is likely the answer: “to be smart and work hard” – or, more tersely, “wit and grit”… Professor Howard Gardner, Hobbs Professor of Cognition and Education at the Harvard Graduate School of Education, has given a public lecture, entitled “Beyond Wit and Grit”, to more than 500 school principals, academics and students today at HKIEd. Professor Gardner is an internationally acclaimed educational psychologist whose works have had a profound impact on thinking and practice in education. In 2005 and again in 2008, he was selected by Foreign Policy and Prospect magazines as one of the 100 most influential public intellectuals in the world. He will also be conferred an honorary doctorate at the 20th Congregation of the Institute tomorrow.
