If your read Enemy at the Gates by William Craig, there is an episode where in the hours when the Soviet ring closed on the Sixth Army at Stalingrad, one of the German quartermasters, Binder, utilized all his resources to gather as many supplies for his division amidst the panic. He calculated by his actions, he gave his unit a chance for survival. IMagine his anger and annoyance to find that the other QMS of the 25 other formations caught in the trap were not so forward looking but instead fled in empty vehicles; In John Tolands, But not in Shame, we find that the USAFFE under Douglas MacArthur did the same in their retreat to the Bataan Peninsula, abandoning vital food stores that might had rendered the reisitance in the Philippines against the JApanese to be even more effective. Instead both armies were starved of supplies that made their end inevitable. I hate to be impersonal but the fact that some foolishly did not think the future while others did, is not an excuse for making the rest of us pay for their lack of vision. America is a land of choices. Thinking that the choice that the Cornucopia lasts forever or taking from those who tried to provide for the storm is not, In my opinion, a good choice. We Americans like to help but we look to seeing that we ourselves are able to make that choice. Partying like no tomorrow, especially at the expense of others, is indeed, a poor decision.
