If you’re not into sports you might have an appreciation for this, but you know how you’ll put up with a guy who has rude, boorish behavior and is a general butt-head and ass-hole, but who can also smack the snot out of a baseball or score touchdowns, etc? Happy Birthday, Albert Bell, 1966. Albert was a piece of work in the humanity field. He chased hecklers into the stands, threw baseballs at spectators, would have wild mood swings (love you one minute try to kill you the next) and chased Trick-or-Treaters down the street. But he played for my Cleveland Indians and he could hit a ton. The fans overlooked the downside. Until he tested the free agent market and went to the rival Chicago White Sox. Then he was scum, the lowest of the low. When he returned to Cleveland he got the business; hecklers had a field day. The folks that vote for the Hall of Fame were seriously drawn on what to do about him. His numbers said yes, but his personality said no – it cost him a Most Valuable Player Award. That point became moot when he developed arthritis in his hip and was out of baseball at age 34.
