Il never forget one of those strikes against my dark skin during my early twenties. About eight or nine years ago my male relative and I would hang out in front of our residence where we had free time after work or school. There was a beautiful African American caramel complexioned girl name Jessica that was the most attractive girl in the neighborhood. All men of all cultures complimented Jessica whether they were walking by or passing by in their car. She possessed what I would refer to as a universal attractiveness. Jessica realizing my relative and I were two great guys to hang out with would spend time with us on our front porch every now and then. My relative and I would even joke around claiming Jessica as our girlfriend as we playfully challenged one another in front of Jessica, I’m sure she was flattered by the big smile she would reveal . il never forget that day when my interest in Jessica stopped all together. We were all spending time outside on the porch as usual when a guy walked by. My relative implied Jessica should give the passing guy an opportunity to date as he laughed. She quickly blurted out how she didn’t like men who were that completion “that dark black”. She expressed it in a way of disgust as she squinted her face. My relative quickly became serious and pointed at me reminding her I was the same completion. She then attempted to justify what she expressed and insisted to tell me I wasn’t” as dark”, as if it really was convincing. It was one of the first times I realized there were black women who perceived chocolate completion men not only as a turn off but something affiliated with disgust
