Illegal Parking in Stadium Woods Saturday during Football Game Note sent to VT Admin, Arboretum Committee and VT Police The attached photos (previous posts) taken by Jeff Kirwan and his note below demonstrate why NOONE, including football players, should be allowed to park in Stadium Woods along the asphalt path or anywhere else in the woods. All the vehicles in these two photos were illegally parked in Stadium Woods during Saturday’s home game. This situation is intolerable. Furthermore, when Jeff Kirwan called the VT police the dispatcher referred the complaint to Parking Services. Were the vehicles ticketed and or towed? It is our understanding that the VT Police are enforcing the no parking rule in this area and preventing vehicles from entering or parking in Stadium Woods. Allowing the football players to park along the path in the woods sets a precedent for other people to park their vehicles in the woods. We suggest the following: 1. Find a parking lot for the football players to park their vehicles prior to and during home games. This is the logical resolution to the problem, and you have not provided any substantive reason as to why a “parking lot solution” is unacceptable to athletics. 2. Ensure that every entrance to the woods is closed, guarded or gated so that only emergency vehicles are driving on the paved and gravel paths. 3. Erect visible signs that read “NO VEHICULAR PARKING or TRAFFIC” at each entrance to Stadium Woods. Egregious violations of VT’s own policy are specifically why the Friends of Stadium Woods will remain vigilant in observing how VA Tech maintains the old-growth forest. Finally, to repeat the obvious once again, if the VT administration had accepted the recommendations to permanently preserve Stadium Woods in perpetuity a plan would already be developed to prevent these types of violations and to truly protect the forest and it’s ecosystem.
