Im Thankful ... A holiday tradition in Atlanta was the column penned by Furman Bisher, one of the finest scribes of any medium. His talent at painting a word-picture are legendary across the scale of the American free press. I am thankful I met Mr. Bisher, and that he took the time to coach an aspiring sports journalist - responding to my letters and phone calls - and treated a press box neophyte with the same regard as his contemporaries. Im thankful he hired my Dad, albeit for a brief stint, in 1951. Im thankful Ive had opportunity to read so much of his beautiful sports prose. I hope you enjoy this, his first column from 1955 - though you may not recognize some of the names or activities, the essence of his appreciation is evident in colorful, humorous and pointed style; I believe you will understand - and be thankful - if you take a moment to read.
