Im deeply torn on the teachers of Reynoldsburg returning to work. I am thrilled they are able to get back in their classrooms. I am beyond thrilled the white Huffmaster goons are headed outta Dodge. But I am getting a very unsettled vibe from teachers and looking over the contract the board posted I can see why. Very little seems to have really changed. Are aspirational goals for class size really hard caps? Plan time is virtually untouched. It seems to me there is very little that will change the situation for teachers or students and certainty wouldnt have convinced me to stay if I knew this was what I was staying for. Teacher turnover? It will continue. On top of that...the teachers have to return to students who have been out of practice of actual learning for 3 weeks and now Im sure the district is going to force them to incorporate all the low quality online elements they paid for without a long term goal or professional development. Typical Reynoldsburg being reactive instead of proactive. Teachers are now being told they cant even have true access to the building tomorrow, but only limited access and hours? Yet Im sure admin will expect them ready to go Monday. So much for no reprisal clauses. For me, the true problems, competitive spirit, and divide-and-conquer mentality began with the academies. Then the board could just let it ride and watch the district implode. I wish all Reynoldsburg teachers the best and hope they all find jobs elsewhere where they are respected as the professionals they are. Personally, I love teaching again. It just took leaving Reynoldsburg to make that happen. And as I cringe at my smaller paycheck every two weeks, I feel like I can breathe for the first time in three years. Its truly not about the money. At least the unfair labor practice against me has been dropped.
