Im going to ask a question here, in all seriousness. Im not trolling, nor am I looking to start a fight: Why are people excited about the new Star Wars movies? From where Im sitting, this is reminding me an awful lot of the hype and anticipation leading up to The Phantom Menace in 1999. And again with Attack of the Clones in 2002. And again with Revenge of the Sith in 2005. My point is, when is enough enough? When do we, as a society containing millions of Star Wars fans, decide to not let this franchise hurt us anymore? Common defenses to the sea of Ep. VII hype, to my reading, have been: 1) George Lucas isnt on board -- No, hes not, but JJ Abrams is. Star Trek Into Darkness and Mission: Impossible III were pretty weak, and JJs writing credits also include Gone Fishin, Regarding Henry and Armageddon. Not terribly encouraging. 2) Lawrence Kasdan co-wrote the script -- Yeah, dude who wrote Empire, Jedi and Raiders is back, but since then he also wrote Dreamcatcher and Darling Companion. And, they threw out a script by Michael Arndt (Toy Story 3, Little Miss Sunshine) in favor of one by Kasdan and JJ. 3) The original cast is back -- And Harrison Ford thought Kingdom of the Crystal Skull was worth his time and our money, too. 4) The new cast is awesome -- Brienne of Tarth is my favorite character on Game of Thrones, and Gwendoline Christie is a being of pure awesome. But Samuel L. Jackson, Liam Neeson, Ewan McGregor and Natalie Portman couldnt save the prequels. 5) Disney is making it, and theyve done wonders with the Marvel movies -- but they also shuttered LucasArts, shelved an 80% done remake of Grim Fandango, and killed the expanded universe, ruling that only Episodes 1 to 6 are canon. Theyre not really concerned with die-hards here, only getting money out of the pockets of casuals. Look, Im not trying to be difficult here, or argumentative. I just wish that people would temper their expectations a bit. When Star Wars: Episode VII - The Ancient Fear (or whatever they change that title to) hits next year, you can be sure Ill go see it. But Im not foaming at the mouth with anticipation by any means. So, please, can we all calm down and have a little perspective here? And honestly, if youre dying to see this movie, can you tell me why?
