Im going to copy and paste what I just posted in a comment on someones wall. To those who say that Xmas takes the Christ out of Christmas, listen up: dont be offended by the X - heres some real history. The X does not negate Christ. The usage of the X is nearly as old as Christianity! The first letter in the Greek word for Christ is chi, and the Greek letter chi is similar to X in the modern Roman alphabet. Hence Xmas is a legitimate abbreviation for Christmas. Putting an X in place of Christ has been going on for over 1000 years. The Greek letters “X” (Chi) and “p” (Rho) superimposed were a common symbol signifying Christ and was called, somewhat unimaginatively, the Chi-Rho. It is still seen in various churches. And thats your history lesson for today. Thank you for listening.
