Im here watching Dallas, Texas pay glowing and sober tribute to JFK on the 50th anniversary of his gruesome murder on the streets of Dallas. What can I say, except to observe that the optics do not match the realities. JFK went down to Dallas November 22, 1963 to broker peace among a fractured Texas Democratic Party. He was greeted with the vilest hateful cover pages and editorials by every local newspaper in Texas. They printed him in unprintable epithets. Locals carried signs that depicted a decent American president in the worst of communist caricatures. And they, by one of theirs, killed him. We could argue that a different and past generation of evil fanatics committed the above cited atrocities, but that argument fails in its contrasting role when Lee Harvey Oswalds 1963 Texas is compared to Ted Cruzs 2013 Texas. It is still a far right, extremist, hateful, tea party ridden, anti-immigrant, voting right curtailing, death penalty priding, secessionist Texas. Fifty years after, you would think that a lot changed. A lot did change - for the worse. Continue to rest in peace, JFK, for it is debatable that if you were to rise from the serenity of Arlington and take that open air motor ride in the streets of Dallas again today that you would not be reinterred in far worse unnatural fatality. Rest in peace, Camelot!
