Im liking walking through the upper east side in the evenings. Extra anonymous in a city where its already quite easy to stay anonymous if I dont hop on the L train. Theres lots of flower shops up here and in the age where doors are closing and chains are moving in quite a good number of tiny businesses open. Clock shops, tailors, nameless old world offices with maps and a clutter of objects, an abundance of hardware stores one boasting the most beautiful arrangement of golden lion head knockers Ive seen in awhile yet in a cramped place that is charming in its dinginess, an ice cream parlor. A father balancing his crying daughter who just fell on sidewalk with the large pizza box also in his arms, an old woman with a face shaded in sunglasses and hat sitting alone outside at the corner of a cafe with a one glass of white wine and two packs of cigarettes stacked atop one another. Strangers passing and receiving one another again and again; tiny moments you think will go one way but go another. This is New York.
