Im opposed to the notion that sincerity equals simplicity (the latter a higher-order kind of insincerity, typically, in my view), and I dont know where it comes from, the opposition to sincerity in so many quarters of our society. Why are irony and calculation so valued at present? Ive read scholarly answers that locate the difficulty in a cycle of such difficulties, and others that blame the size of our culture (the loss of the individual voice in Romes dominion) or its segregation into small spheres of influence and large swaths of workerdom, but these answers feel simplistic to me in exactly the way the ironists parody. Is there (in the genuine sense: cutting through the extraneous, toward a beating heart or hearts) a simpler answer?
