Im sharing this because I see shares and comments all the time about how police exceed their authority, and most of the time its nonsense. Im including my comment below that goes into a lot of what I see as either a lack or a misunderstanding of the law when it comes to police. OK, I get the idea, but here are several thoughts: 1. police have the authority to detain anyone with probable cause if they suspect a violation of the law 2. he was drunk 3. someone called the law on him (according to what they said) 4. he did not obey the police (who had detained him; most people dont realize that once a cop says I need you to stay right here/sit down/stand here and talk to me you are detained. he just hasnt cuffed you yet). 5. he keeps referencing federal authority; this is a local police matter 6. Police keep the peace; thats their function. In that function, they have wide authority to inhibit or arrest behavior that disturbs the peace. A drunk dude yelling is disturbing the peace, ergo, detention. Still, the cop should not have pushed him. Everything else looks by the book.
