Im sure many of you will sympathize with this. Spending more and more time barefoot is starting to cause unexpected problems. Times when I am required to be in shoes feel awful (why am I standing on this weird shaped surface, and why is its cushy nature somehow the most uncomfortable, even painful, thing about it?). Im not even talking about running, here, just about day-to-day shoe wear while going about life. I have this pair of Keen shoes which formerly were a godsend -- the most comfortable and well-fitting shoes Id ever found, finally a pair with a wide enough and square enough toe box. Yet even these shoes are torture to stand or walk in now. My feet rebel against the great discomfort of cushion and support and rise. I think maybe what I need to do is remove the arch supports from the shoes that I still sometimes have to wear. That will leave them too high-volume so Ill have to replace them with flatter insoles. Unfortunately, most flat insoles of any thickness are highly cushioned. Ill work something out. The other closely related problem: I was really getting far, previously, with my walking and hiking distances -- sometimes 20 miles -- but now that I cant stand to be in shoes, especially during time for exercise by choice, like weekends, I only get to walk as far as my bare feet can stand. I know that eventually my feet will be ready for long bare distances, but for quite a while Ill be limited to walking/running very short amounts, and my legs and lungs are kind of angry about this! The compromise for now is to spend part time walking and running in minimal shoes. But Im quickly realizing that the main problem with minimal shoes -- even the slimmest 5 Fingers -- is that theyre still too much.
