Im working on a blog post that will undoubtedly ruffle some feathers in the rescue and advocacy world. When I first got involved, I admit to wearing rosy-colored glasses, naively thinking we were all on the same team. Im sure I will lose some friends over this, but, frankly, I didnt get involved for the friends. I had plenty of those before, and lost some of those along the way due to the commitment I put forth and the lack of time given to them because of it. As in anything, what Im going to write doesnt apply to everyone. If theres anything Ive learned about generalizations of any type, its theyre equally wrong. So, for all the great people doing what you do, however large or small, I thank you. If what I say in this blog offends you in any way, I apologize (to some degree)...again, it doesnt apply to everyone, but it has to be said. Through this Ive learned that back-stabbing and being two-faced will get you far. Its unsettling to say the least. Weve had entire campaigns ripped off and used by other (at the time, anyway) larger organizations without a bit of recognition for their bright idea. But, I didnt say a word, because it wasnt professional and I didnt want to stir the pot. After all, were on the same team, right? Much has changed. As I go down the final road with GTPI (it has to end at some point), my entire plan has also changed. For so long it was easy to preach to the choir, because the choir (however skewed some of their opinions were on the issue) was an immediate audience. Even though I never intended that to happen, it just did. So, going forward Im taking what I call the Blackfish effect. In short, its targeting that large middle audience that has no allegiance one way or the other, to get the type of response and backlash that that film has sparked, but on the issue of breed discrimination. When I got involved I truly wanted to change things, because the perception at the time about Pit Bull dogs was horrendous. That has also changed quite a bit, but there is clearly still work to be done. This is my reasons why I am not afraid to lose personal supporters that I have forged. Its nothing personal, its just business.
