Im writing a book, Women Warriors in the Martial Arts, and have a facebook account and facebook page with that name. I thought I would share a post from that account with my friends here. If you really know me, youll enjoy my sense of humor because a lady never talks about going from the mat to the mattress: It seems that many people are curious about my personal life, my marriage to Jim Harrison to be exact, so here goes… One year Jim wanted me to cook Bouillabaisse soup for his birthday; so I did. I invited our dear friend, John Reddis, and his family to share the meal and birthday celebration with us. John is an excellent Italian cook. He learned to cook from his Grandmother who owned a restaurant in Sicily. Naturally, John’s mother had well developed, very refined taste buds considering her privileged childhood. It was with this understanding that I compared recipes to find the very best one, and I purchased only the best, top quality, fresh ingredients to insure my soup would be to Jim’s and my company’s liking. No sooner had the first spoonful of delicious soup touched John’s mother’s mouth than an appraisal of my culinary skills was uttered. “What’s this? It could castrate a man or at least make him sterile!” From there the compliments just got more extreme. Her evaluation of Jim’s favorite delicacy continued throughout the evening and ended as we said goodnight when she walked out my front door. I can honestly say that I have never been so complimented in my life before or since that celebration. Note: By the time I was twelve, I was designated the family cook. I’m the second oldest of ten children and none of them cared to challenge me for the title. The other choices were diapers, laundry and ironing so it’s obvious that my brothers and sisters must have really liked my cooking. I actually am a very good cook according to John and the many other dinner guests that I’ve entertained over the decades; however, I never cooked Bouillabaisse soup again after Jim’s birthday. Today, I couldn’t even find a recipe for it in my extensive cookbook collection. So, I thought I would share one of MY favorite soup recipes with you in honor of my Bouillabaisse soup memory from my marriage with Jim… Try it if you dare. Tom Kha Soup 1 can Coconut Milk or Coconut Cream 1 can Chicken, Beef, Pork or Vegetable broth (I boil the chicken bones from Costco’s rotisserie chicken) ½ can Water 5 slices Galangal (can substitute fresh Ginger) 1 stalk crushed Lemon Grass (I cut it into 6” pieces and crush it with a cast iron skillet) 1 pinch Sea Salt 1 pinch Chili Powder 1 pinch Sugar 1 pinch Curry Powder ½ Kaffir leaf ( can substitute 1 lime zest) ½ Onion diced and sweated 2 Carrots Simmer on med-low heat for an hour to bring out the flavors then add: 2 cups Tofu, Shrimp, or Chicken (I use ½ teaspoon of salted brine shrimp and the meat from the Costco Chicken Bones) 1 cup of your favorite kind of Mushrooms diced 2 Spring Onions 1 Tomato diced … I double dare you to try it. I usually triple the recipe and freeze it in one serving portions. It’s what’s for lunch and mine is in the microwave waiting for me. Yummy!
