Immigration Information a. General Information New students from the following countries must obtain a Visa With Reference (VDR) before they enter Malaysia. The countries are: China India Pakistan Bangladesh Nepal Afghanistan Nigeria Libya New students from countries other than the above need not obtain VDR prior to their entry to Malaysia. They will be given a social pass upon their arrival at the entry point of Malaysia. NOTE: Please postpone bringing your dependents into the country until your student pass application has been approved by the Immigration Department. If you decide to do so before the student pass has been approved, UPM will not be responsible for any subsequent action taken by the Immigration Department. b. Visa with Reference (VDR) VDR means a visa issued by the overseas Malaysian Representative Office (Embassy/Consulate) to non-citizens to enable them to enter Malaysia after the visa is approved by the Immigration Department of Malaysia. In order to get an approval from the Immigration Department of Malaysia, the following documents are required by the Visa and Pass Unit, International Division of UPM: Copy of all passport pages (included front and back cover) Recent photographs (standard passport size and blue background) Copy of UPM offer letter Medical check-up report Copy of Academic Certificate (In English) Once the application is approved by the Immigration Department of Malaysia, the approval letter will be posted to the student’s address. To apply for VDR, the letter and all documents listed below must be presented to the nearest Malaysian Representative Office: Visa Application Form (available from Malaysian Representative Office) - filled and signed by the applicant Passport (original and copy) - passport must be valid for more than 18 months from the date of travel 2 recent photographs (standard passport size) Confirmed Air-Ticket with flight details and ticket numbers Original copy of Approval Letter (VDR) from Malaysian Immigration Department Offer letter from UPM Proof of payment of visa fee & Malaysian Representative Office’s Service Charges Students are required to enter Malaysia within 3 months after the issuance of the VDR. Upon arrival the student will be given a social visit pass but its validity is limited to between 30 to 90 days*. In order to convert the social visit pass to a student pass, they must register as a UPM student as soon as possible. Once they have registered, the process to obtain the student pass will be handled by the Visa and Pass Unit, International Division of UPM. * Subject to the latest ruling by the Immigration Department of Malaysia c. Student from countries who do not require VDR to enter Malaysia Students from countries who do not require VDR can enter Malaysia without an entry visa. However, at the entry point into Malaysia, they must present their passport (validity of passport must not be less than 18 months) and the UPM Admission Offer Letter to the Immigration Officer. The student will be given a social visit pass but its validity is limited to between 30 to 90 days. In order to convert the social visit pass to a student pass, they must register as a UPM student as soon as possible. Once they have registered, the process to obtain the student pass will be handled by the Visa and Pass Unit, International Division of UPM. d. Student Pass The Student Pass is a document issued by the Malaysian Immigration Department to a non-citizen to reside in Malaysia for MORE THAN ONE (1) MONTH, for educational purposes only. The student pass appears in the form of a sticker in the passport. To apply for a student pass, the following documents must be submitted to the Visa and Pass Unit, International Division of UPM: i. A copy of your passport ii. 2 passport‐sized photographs iii. Personal Bond Deposit* (depending on the country of origin). The deposit is refundable upon completion of studies. *The personal bond deposit is a compulsory requirement set by the Immigration Department of Malaysia for all international students.
