Impressive! Meet Kenyan Journalists Nominated For The Prestigious CNN Awards. Musicians have the Grammy’s while actors have The Oscar’s. Journalists too have not been left out in the awards world; they have the CNN MultiChoice African Journalist of The Year awards. The competition which is in its 19th year, shortlisted 28 finalists from 10 countries across the continent. This year the competition received entries from 38 countries across the continent, including French and Portuguese speaking Africa. Announcing the finalists, chairperson of the independent judging panel Ferial Haffajee said: “2013 was a huge news year, and the stories from our continent set a global agenda. The judges were pleased with the quality of entries, and were impressed by the depth of specialist beat reporting. In addition, they noted the growing sophistication of the use of images and pictures across all platforms.” Among the Kenyan finalists include: 1. Bob Koigi from Farmbizafrica a flagship product of African Laughter Ltd. Mr. Robert Koigi is a Journalist at DW-TV and has won numerous international awards. He also corresponds for local and international media houses. He is also a media trainer and a communication consultant. Mr. Koigi is currently pursuing a Masters Degree in International Studies at the University of Nairobi .In 30th October 2013 he was announced the UN FAO Kenya journalist of the year in the FAO media awards 2013. 2. Patrick Mayoyo from Daily Nation. He is the deputy news editor of daily nation. An award winning journalist based in Kenya specializing in investigative journalism. In 2013 he received the African Climate Change and Environmental Reporting (ACCER) award 3. Christine Muthee She is another nominee who works at Media Development in Africa. She studied in Daystar University 4. Oliver Oscar Ochanda TV Producer from Media Development in Africa. He previously worked at Kenya National Commission on Human Rights and he studied at the Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology. 5. John Muchangi Njiru is a science writer/editor from The Star Newspaper, He has seven years experience working as a sub editor and science writer. His career began in 2005 as the science features writer for People Daily Newspaper in Kenya. He later became science editor of the same newspaper before moving to Star Newspaper in 2007 as a sub editor. Currently he is a science writer of the same newspaper. He specializes mainly in environmental and health writing. He studied at Knight Science Journalism at MIT in Massachusetts 6. Joseph Mathenge a Freelance Journalist for The Saturday Nation. He is the brave photojournalist was inside the mall doing what he does best as the military combed the building. Mathenge managed to capture a clip in which a policeman bravely crawled on his stomach to rescue a woman who lied still on the floor as if dead shielding her children behind a counter inside Westgate Mall. 7. Ann Mawathe; Producer, reporter, broadcaster from Citizen TV She had resigned from BBC as a host for the Amka na BBC Programme. She attended the university of Leicester and has a master’s degree in mass communication. 8. Rashid Ibrahim from Citizen TV. Is a cameraman and editor at Citizen TV and had previously worked in the office of the prime minister and Setanta sports Rashid Ibrahim He has valuable experience in the video industries and broadcast television. He has successfully worked on Features, Documentaries, Light entertainment, Music productions, News, Sport and Current affairs. 9. Evelyn Watta from Sportsnewsarena. She grew up in maasai area where radio was the only media she had access to. She says she became a sport journalist because it was different as a woman. She was re-elected for a second term in the Lausanne based International Sports Association, AIPS Executive Committee Board. The finalists will enjoy an all-expense paid four day programme of workshops, media forums and networking in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania culminating in a Gala Award Ceremony on Saturday 18 October 2014.
