In 1957, Martin Charnin performed in Leonard Bernstein and Stephen Sondheim’s West Side Story on Broadway. In 1977, Annie opened on Broadway with Charnin as its lyricist. In 1982, a movie version was released with Bernadette Peters as Lily St Regis. In 1987, Into the Woods written by James Lapine and Stephen Sondheim opened on Broadway with Bernadette Peters as the Witch. In 1999, director Rob Marshall makes a TV version of Annie for Disney. In 2012, Lilla Crawford plays Annie in a Broadway revival directed by James Lapine. In Dec 2014, a new Annie movie and Into the Woods are released in cinemas. The movie version of Into the Woods is directed by Rob Marshall for Disney. It stars Lilla Crawford as Little Red Riding Hood and Meryl Streep as the Witch. Fans of Bernadette Peters who ask why she wasn’t cast as the Witch can take consolation that Streep is actually an anagram of Peters.
