In 1977 the A Body was redesigned completely in light of New EPA regulations. Power dropped, as well ass a few pounds, which made these Pre G Body cars 4-600 lbs lighter than thier A Body predecessors. In 1981 the A was replaced by the G designation, the frame was unchanged but all models got new skins. Again the Grand Prix debuted an even further redesign change. Aero dynamics came into play now. The 81-87 GP became longer and sleeker. The front became more narrow and sharp lines were softended. Also, unlike any other G Body, the GP got Flared Quarters which gave it a slight aero dynamic edge. Engine options at this time were reduced to just the Buick 3.8L V6 and the Chevy 5.0L V8, the Pontiac V8 was dropped in 81. No other serious changes came later because Pontiac began focusing more on the development of their FWD GP that would replace the G Body all together..
