In April 2013 the European Commission launched another initiative to promote oversized trucks (LHVs). In a proposal to change the directive on weights and dimensions of commercial vehicles the Commission intends to legalise the use of longer vehicles between neighbouring countries. At the same time however, the EU commission is withdrawing plans to make LHVs the general standard for all member states. Instead, the paper is focusing on improving the aerodynamics of road freight vehicles. Allowing cross-border journeys for mega trucks could be the beginning of the slippery slope that will see, with slight delays, longer vehicles introduced into every country in Europe.
