In August 1965 I was in the Mather AFB BEMO getting my cold weather gear and overheard a retiring Major, who had been in for twenty-five years ahead of me give the stock clerk his views on the Airmans heritage. The Airman had told him he would have to surrender his leather flight jacket, which the Major retorted, Like hell I will. For one thing, it was issued to me when your Air Force was my Army Air Corps. This coats flown twenty-five missions over Germany, and another thirty over North Korea, as well as fifteen over North Vietnam, and Ill be damned if Im going to give it back! The Major raised such a ruckus that the Supply Sergeant came out of his office to calm things down, and told the Airman to forget about the jacket. Ill remember that day for as long as I live.
