In Denver, the big question for election day tomorrow is whether we will expand charter schools (Barbara OBrien) or continue to expand and invest in neighborhood schools (Michael Kiley). Charter schools argue that they offer expanded choices and serve as a testing are for new educational ideas. Unfortunately, theres no evidence they outperform neighborhood schools and every evidence that market forces neither support the interests of education nor the interests of children. Education cant only be about money, it has to be about discover, the fulfillment of individual potential, and the creation interconnected of communities of learning. Barbara OBrien will likely be elected, she has a sterling resume, the support of Senator Michael Bennet and will bring a lot of institutional strength to the office. Unfortunately, it doesnt matter how tall your ladder is if its leaning against the wrong wall.
