In February 2013, while herding sheep in Jahara Desert, Pachaimuthu Jayasankar was whacked by a land mine explosion when he unknowingly stepped on the mine. He lost both his legs as well as eyesight. He is in Room 14, Ward 5. As per the hospital staff, he can go back to India by the end of next month. Jayashankar is optimistic that once in India, with further treatment, he will be able to recover his eyesight. Based on doctor’s opinion, this requires further investigation and treatment in a specialty hospital. Jayashankar hails from Puagaipatti, Villupuram in Tamil Nadu. An aged father, wife and two young kids are dependent on Jayasankar for sustenance. His sons are only aged 4 and 2. His family stays in a very old house in India which cannot last for long without major maintenance and due to his present situation he also requires an attached European toilet which needs to be constructed. His sponsor is a Saudi citizen who is married to a Kuwaiti citizen. They have not offered any financial support. With the help of Indian Embassy, a legal case is being prepared to be filed for damages against the Ministry of Defense. Such legal proceedings generally require a long time and the outcome is also uncertain. Also, considering his future medical requirements and his family’s needs any financial support he can get will not be too much.
