In July of 2013, my wife and I traveled throughout Normandy in France. I have always wondered about the reference to poppies in the John McCrae poem In Flanders Fields and on our trip noticed that the poppies grew wild in the fields everywhere. I took some photographs of the poppies and also of the German armaments that lined the coast to deter invasion by the Allies. It was a very moving experience to be there. Millions of lives were lost in World War II, including two uncles and two brothers of mine. Because I wasnt born until after the war ended, I never got to meet them. Over the years, I have met many Canadians and others who, like me, lost relatives in the war. I am happy that Naziism, one particular form of human idiocy, was stopped because the allies won the war. I am very sad that combating ignorance and hatred and territoriality is an ongoing battle and that there is always another nonsensical ideology waiting to replace the ones that failed.
