In Mombasa, environment around you has away of slowing things down, especially if you just arrived from the hustle-bustle that is Nairobi City. First the weather can be so unkind, since it becomes so hot and humid at times, sometimes not able to sleep at night. People here are generally slow. To get a document sent to you on email for example can take so long and frustrating; and following it up is not a guarantee that you will get it done in a hurry anyway. Getting the same document printed is all another story. Programmes do not start on schedule either. If you are staying in a hotel and need to have breakfast on time, better start early since it might take a little longer that expected. Am sometimes taken by surprise at how the tuk-tuk guys do not know places around their own town...as a visitor they have to keep asking you for direction even after you have explained where you want to go and you are a visitor! Even getting your change, whether from the tuk-tuk or the kiosk, is never in any hurry. You get bored but by the end of day, you get used to it. After all you are in Mombasa. The next time you are in this port city and much in a hurry, do not be surprised if you hear someone telling you: Kama una haraka si ungelikuja jana, taratibu...! Is it only me or is anyone having the same experience? But again, you cannot honestly blame people here can you? Its too hot down here!
