In South America, ayahuasca is an integral part of some tribal societies. But in recent years, Ayahuasca tourism has become a big business. Dr Daniela Peluso, senior lecturer in social anthropology at the University of Kent, explains: Whereas, only a few decades ago, the ayahuasca experience required that a lone traveller make his or her way to the forests of South America, now notions of local and global spaces converge as shamans and tourists travel throughout the world to perform and participate in a diversity of ayahuasca ceremonies. In this article, BBC looks at the growing ayahuasca tourism and its risks accordingly. Emma Thelwell, who took the drug herself, also explains why it has become a rite of passage for some backpackers.
