In an earlier post I did several days ago, I said there were a couple of events that happened in our community and also Kingman, that devastated our communities and still hurts to think about, but thought I should also put them out there for you to remember? The first was a summer league baseball game that was played on the HS baseball fields on May 13, 1973, when a freak light bolt dropped down from the sky and struck the pitchers mound and killed John Wade and injuring most of the surrounding infield players as well. What a tragedy to his family and the whole town. The second was on July 5,1973 when a railroad tank car filled with propane gas caught fire and after the Kingman fire department arrived and started to fight to contain the fire, got caught in a horrific explosion when the propane ignited sending a huge fireball out which caught about 10 of the local firefighters and rescue personnel in the aftermath. Firefights and emergency responders from all over Mohave County converged on the scene to assist in the firefighting efforts including many form our Lake Havasu City. Anyone that remembers these two incidents in out communities history will never forget those that lost their lives on those two days.
