In case you ever wondered where the "Halls of Montezuma" came from... It refers to the attack on and storming of the Castle of Chapultepac in 1847 by the Marine Corps during the Mexican American War. The fortress guarded Mexico City and the battle included many young officers who would later go on to fame in the Civil War- Capt. Robert E. Lee, Lt. U.S. Grant, and Lt. Beauregard, among others. The Mexican troops were led by Gen. Santa Anna, of Alamo fame. Legend has it that the red stripe down the outer seam of the Marine officer dress uniform, called the blood stripe, represents the many lives lost during the battle which resulted in the capture and occupation of Mexico City.
