In case youre wondering what the heck this is: Two months ago, Jay Todd Richey and I formally began an organization called the WKU Student Coalition for Renters Rights. Despite the long name, our purpose is pretty simple: to educate about and advocate for the rights of renters in the South Central Kentucky area. This area, unfortunately, sees a lot of slum landlording because renters here (including many refugees and students) dont receive any substantial legal protections and are therefore in a very vulnerable position. While there are groups already in place that advocate for renters, there has yet to be a collegiate-level organization that promotes this issue at WKU. So our goal is to work with local ministries, churches, non-profits, civic leaders, other campus groups, and just engage students in general to help tackle this problem, which is one of the biggest facing Bowling Green today. This will be our first year and Im beyond excited to see what it turns into. Jay Todd has led the way in establishing this, so hats off to his excellent leadership in getting this together.
