In his books, Hoagy left no doubt when it came to his reverence and admiration for Reginald (Reggie) Duvalle, a ragtime pianist he encountered when the family left Bloomington and moved to Indianapolis in 1916. By Hoagys account, it appears to have been a fairly dismal period in his life, but when he was welcomed into the Duvalles home on Harlan Street, Reggie taught him things about music that resonated with him for the remainder of his life, saying, Never play anything that aint RIGHT. You may not make any money, but youll never get hostile with yourself. Duvalle went on to form his own dance band, the Duvalle Blackbirds, and for awhile, had his own weekly radio show on WFBM in Indianapolis. On December 26, 1927, the Blackbirds played to a packed crowd for the opening of Madame C.J. Walkers Theatre on Indiana Avenue. From what I understand, that is where this photo was taken -
