In it’s report for the World Bank, the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research and Climate Analytics says that even with the current climate change mitigation commitments and pledges fully implemented, there is roughly a 20 percent likelihood of exceeding a 4° Celsius warming by 2100. If they are not met, a warming of 4°C could occur as early as the 2060s.” A 4°C warmer world, according to the report would be one of unprecedented heat waves, severe drought, and major floods in many regions, with serious impacts on ecosystems. It further says, “No nation will be immune to the impacts of climate change. However, the distribution of impacts is likely to be inherently unequal and tilted against many of the world’s poorest regions, which have the least economic, institutional, scientific, and technical capacity to cope and adapt.” Now, we were all witness to the devastation caused by ‘Ondoy’ and ‘Pepeng’, the monsoon rains of 2012 and 2013. And the world was horrified by the destruction brought about by ‘Yolanda. They were all believed to be adverse manifestations of climate change. The point is, with action, the report says, a 4°C warmer world can be avoided by holding the warming to below 2°C. It seems we are left with no choices here. It is either we do our part in holding down the warming or bear the thought of having our children’s children suffer life in a 4°C warmer world ...
