In many ways...this is actually the perspective that many Native people do see the states. When we ask one another...where do you come from...and they reply with either their nation or geographical area...in our minds we connect to something like this...minus the State and Country Border lines. Not to mention many know the stories of how we come up through the Mississippi....like the tree trunk of our indigenous family tree...where we branched out all over Turtle Island (North and Central American Continent) from there. And the roots of our tree are south. ..deep down...Mayan Country...some say deeper from South America. Some groups come from the Beringa...Strates. Inuit. ..Diné... But for the most of the Indigenous peoples of the Americas....we start off from the deep south and moved our way up north and became many. We are related...family that branched off so long ago...we have so many languages. In the Carolinas alone...4 major languages with 100s of dialects spoken at the time of contact and at least 2 or 3 major trade languages were spoken up the east coast. All over our Country... territories many different languages still exist. We are old... much older than what people realize. When I think of Texas...Maine or Washington state... I think of the Native nations and Ancestral Territories...first...what language? Its the way I am hard wired...connected to the rest of my Indigenous family tree of native peoples...the New World is our Old World...we never forget...Its in our DNA...
